Don't Worry Darling is a 2022 American psychological thriller film directed by Olivia Wilde from a screenplay by Katie Silberman with a special script by Carey Van Dyke, Shane Van Dyke, and Silberman. The film stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Wilde, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, and Chris Pine. The film follows an idyllic housewife living in a company town who begins to suspect a sinister secret being kept from its inhabitants by the man who runs it.

Don't Worry Darling premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2022, and was released theatrically in the United States by Warner Bros. on September 23. Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics who praised Pugh's performance, cinematography, and production design but criticized the script and direction, noting similarities to other works in the genre such as The Stepford Wives (1975) and Get Out (2017).

The film was announced in August 2019 after a bidding war between 18 studios to acquire another project directed by Olivia Wilde. New Line Cinema won the auction. The original script was written by brothers Carey and Shane Van Dyke; the script appeared on the 2019 Blacklist. Katie Silberman was brought in to do the rewrite that became the screenplay for the film. According to Wilde, the sinister character Frank was inspired by psychologist and author Jordan Peterson, whom she described as a "pseudo-intellectual hero in the incel community". Peterson rejected this characterization, calling Don't Worry Darling "the latest propaganda peddled by the woke, self-righteous bores and bullies who now control Hollywood."
Shooting
The opening scene was filmed at The Kaufmann House in Palm Springs.
Filming began in Los Angeles on October 26, 2020. It was temporarily suspended for two weeks on November 4 after a crew member tested positive for COVID-19, resulting in stars Pugh, Styles, and Pine being quarantined. Filming ended on February 13, 2021. The film's original score was composed by John Powell.

The opening sequence was filmed at Kaufmann's house. It was the first film to be shot there. Wilde was inspired by his architecture and hung his photo on her wall while working on the script. She told Variety, "Being there was huge. Directing the first take there was like a really auspicious start to this movie, which was this love letter not just to film, but to architecture, to design, to this era."
Marketing
At CinemaCon 2022, on stage at Caesars Palace, Wilde confirmed that the idea for the film was inspired by Inception, The Matrix, and The Truman Show. The trailer, which was also screened at CinemaCon, was posted online on May 2, 2022.[42] A teaser poster was released on June 16, 2022, and a second trailer was released on July 21, 2022.
David Christopherson of MovieWeb called the poster "disturbing" and wrote of the trailer, Valerie Ettenhofer of /Film said that Don't Worry Darling looks like a "full-fledged horror movie", noting the mystery surrounding its plot and the Stepford Mistress subtext. The official release poster was released on August 11, 2022. An edited version of the second trailer was shown in theaters and was released online on September 21, 2022.

Don't Worry Darling had its world premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival on September 5, 2022.Claims of Styles spitting on Pine during the Venice premiere based on videos recorded from inside the theater (adding to an already rocky press tour marred by allegations of a disagreement between Wilde and Pugh) were dismissed as a "ridiculous story" and " complete fabrication" by Pine's representative.The film will also be screened at the 48th Deauville American Film Festival and the 70th San Sebastián International Film Festival.[48] It was released in theaters on September 23, 2022. According to a schedule announced by WarnerMedia in 2021, it may be available on HBO Max and/or premium video-on-demand 45 days after its theatrical release, although subsequent announcements by new parent company Warner Bros. Discovery indicate that streaming timing will be considered. further on a "case by case" basis.
The film was released on VOD on October 25, 2022, and is scheduled for release on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K UHD on November 29, 2022.
Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 38% based on 316 reviews, with an average rating of 5.4/10. The website's critic consensus reads: "Despite an interesting array of talent on both sides of the camera, Don't Worry Darling is mostly a confusing rehash of all-too-familiar themes."[Metacritic gave the film a weighted average score of 48. out of 100 based on 62 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B–" on an A+ to F scale, while viewers from PostTrak gave the film an overall positive score of 67%, with 53% saying they would definitely recommend it.

Critics praised Pugh's performance, cinematography and visual style, but found the overall film unsatisfactory. Rotten Tomatoes reported that Styles had a "questionably entertaining turn" and that reaction to the third act was mixed. Kate Erbland of IndieWire, reviewing the film after its Venice premiere, praised the set design and the cast, especially Pugh's, but found fault with the script, summarizing: "Pugh's excellent performance and extraordinary craftsmanship below the lines are impeccably rendered, but they can't overcome the concept of the film's rotten core .” In a mixed review for The A.V. Club, Tomris Laffley praised Pugh's performance and also had positive words for Pine's performance and the film's visuals, but called Styles "over the top" and criticized the direction, finding his handling of themes and ideas heavy-handed, writing, "Perhaps the major deficit of Don't Worry Darling is not even predictability, but an apparent lack of new ideas of its own.” Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it "a film set in a desert of unoriginality" and criticized the script and direction. Bilge Ebiri of Vulture.com described the film as "smooth, competent, (mostly) well-acted and merely tedious", although he felt that the plot "can get boring and repetitive after a while". He praised the performances of Pugh, Wilde, and Pine and named Styles as "the weak link...who is not without talent, but who fails to give Jack the dimensionality or internal conflict that the character clearly needs". Phil de Semlyn of Time Out stated that "Pugh saves this stylish but inert horror thriller from disaster", with Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair echoing these sentiments, describing Pugh as "a commanding and focused actor who makes the most of the hash served up". Ewan Gleadow, writing for the independent online publication Clapper, praised Pugh's performance, but ultimately concluded that the film "just isn't up to scratch".
