Halloween Ends is a 2022 American slasher film that is the sequel to Halloween Kills (2021), the thirteenth installment in the Halloween franchise and the final film in a sequel trilogy that began with the 2018 film, a direct sequel to the 1978 film. The film was directed by David Gordon Green and co-writers Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan, and Chris Bernier star Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, Rohan Campbell, Will Patton, Kyle Richards, and James Jude Courtney. The film revolves around Corey Cunningham, a young man who falls in love with Laurie Strode's granddaughter, while a series of events, including crossing paths with Michael Myers, change his life and turn him into a murderous outcast.
Development
In June 2018, Danny McBride confirmed that he and David Gordon Green had originally intended to pitch two films back-to-back, then decided against it pending a response to the first film. In September 2018, producer Jason Blum said that "we'll do a sequel if the movie works". A month later, after the opening weekend of the new Halloween film, McBride confirmed that early development had begun on a sequel. Green, McBride, and Jeff Fradley planned a two-film story arc but decided on a trilogy after realizing they had more material than they originally thought. Once Halloween was released in theaters, McBride and Green began plotting the story for the two sequels, along with other writers such as Scott Teems and Chris Bernier, and Paul Brad Logan for each installment. In July 2019, Bloody Disgusting announced that a third film was also in development, with Green returning as director. The site also claimed that the studio is considering an October 2020 release for both films
Casting
In July 2019, alongside the announcement of two Halloween 2018 sequels, it was announced that Jamie Lee Curtis would reprise her role as Laurie Strode in Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. Judy Greer and Andi Matichak were confirmed to reprise their roles as Karen and Allyson that same month. In December 2021, it was revealed that Kyle Richards would reprise her role in the film. The character was not initially expected to return to the film, but following positive reception to Richards' performance, the script was rewritten to give her an expanded role. The following month, Michael O'Leary joined the cast. After being cast, Rohan Campbell was initially unaware of his character's importance to the story. Green tried to keep the actor out of the press leading up to the film's release. According to Campbell, both Green and Curtis warned him of possible backlash regarding the introduction of his character. Casting calls were held in late January and early February 2022 in many cities in southeast Georgia. In an interview with Collider, Green indicated that co-writer Danny McBride had applied to appear in the film, potentially as a character who fights Myers. In June 2022, Nick Castle announced that he would make a cameo appearance unrelated to the role of Michael Myers. After the trailer was released in July 2022, it was revealed that Omar Dorsey, Will Patton, and James Jude Courtney would reprise their roles from the previous films. Green cited Courtney's "extraordinary work" in the previous films as the reason for his decision to have him portray Michael Myers throughout the film.
Shooting
Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends were originally planned to be filmed back-to-back, but this did not happen due to an "intense schedule". In March 2020, Blum confirmed that filming would take place during the summer. Filming was quietly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production was scheduled to begin in 2021 in Wilmington, North Carolina. In August 2021, Courtney confirmed that filming would begin on January 10, 2022. However, filming officially began on January 19, 2022, in Savannah, Georgia under the working title Cave Dweller. Michael Simmonds again served as cinematographer.[49] Curtis began filming her scenes on January 25 and finished on February 22. Additional scenes were filmed in Sylvania, Georgia. Filming ended on March 9, 2022. In June 2022, two weeks of filming were reported in Savannah. However, these skirmishes lasted only four days and were completed in the same month.
Cash register
As of October 26, 2022, Halloween Ends has grossed $56 million in the United States and Canada and $29.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $85.7 million.
In the United States and Canada, Halloween Ends was projected to earn $50–60 million in its opening weekend from 3,901 theaters. The film grossed $20.2 million on its first day, including $5.4 million from Thursday night previews, up 11% from Kills' $4.85 million a year earlier. It went on to debut with $40.1 million, topping the box office but finishing below projections, partly due to the film's simultaneous release on the Peacock streaming platform; Universal reported that it was the most-watched movie or series on the platform over two days. The studio also reported that the film was most popular with viewers aged 18 to 34, with only 26% aged 35 and over. The film dropped 80% in its second weekend, finishing fourth with $8 million. The 89% drop from the film's first Friday to its second was a "near-record" drop and was attributed to its day-to-day release and poor critical and audience reception.
